The 20-60-20 Guideline: Building a Positive Pickleball Community
Pickleball’s open play format fosters inclusivity and allows players of all skill levels to play together. However, challenges can arise when higher-level players stick to their group, friends only play with friends, or beginners feel excluded.
To create a more enjoyable and inclusive environment, we follow the 20-60-20 guideline:
- 20%: Play with players better than you.
- 60%: Play with players at your skill level.
- 20%: Play with players below your skill level.
Why It Matters
- Playing with better players challenges and improves your game.
- Playing with your peers provides competitive and balanced matches.
- Playing with less experienced players helps grow the community and builds your own leadership skills.
Tips for Implementation
- Playing Up (20%):
If you want to play with better players, take the initiative! Ask them to drill, play, or join their games. Most are open to it if you’re willing to reach out. Organizing games or events is another way to invite them. - Playing Down (20%):
Say “yes” when asked by lower-level players and use these games to work on different strategies, like shot placement or court positioning. Supporting others helps the sport grow and strengthens your own skills. - Balanced Play (60%):
This is your comfort zone—your go-to matches with players at your level.
By following the 20-60-20 guideline, you’ll not only improve your skills but also foster a supportive and inclusive pickleball community. In helping others grow, you grow too! 🌟
